Alice Savage Bachman, 54, Johnson City, died unexpectedly Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at the Lake View Dock on South Holston Lake.  Mrs. Bachman was a native of Little Rock, Ark. She was the daughter of the late Scott and Patricia Savage.

   Alice was a tireless advocate for the education of children, especially at Fairmont Elementary School where she served several years as the treasurer and membership director of the Parent Teacher Association. She also served as PTA president at Stratton Elementary School just before a citywide redistricting in the early 1990s.

   She helped bring together the Stratton and Fairmont communities with her astute leadership and caring ways. At Fairmont, she organized field days, fall festivals, and other fundraisers. Among her many contributions, she made certain the school's health clinic was stocked and the school's impoverished children could attend field trips. The school's library was also of special interest to her. She received the citywide PTA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006.

   Alice served on the board of directors and as treasurer for the Suzuki School of Music where her children were violin students for many years. She was an active member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church and helped with children's programs.

   She graduated from the University of Arkansas with a degree in Horticulture.  Alice had traveled through India, Afghanistan and other Middle Eastern countries before settling in Nevada where she met and married Tom Bachman. After the birth of their daughter, Taylor, the couple moved to Johnson City to be closer to family. In 1990, she became a Certified Public Accountant.

   She worked for the accounting firm of Lewis and Associates. Since 2004, she worked as the Finance Director of the United Way of Washington County Tennessee.  Her professionalism, financial knowledge and concern for detail allowed the organization to be ranked excellent in accountability for a non-profit business.       

   She is survived by her husband, Tom, and children Taylor and Logan, both of Johnson City, Tenn.; step mother-in-law, Jane Bachman of Bristol, Tenn., mother-in-law and step father-in-law, Sarah Masengill Bell and Ron Bell of Limestone, Tenn., brother, Scott Savage III of Little Rock, Ark.; brothers-in law and sisters-in law: John Michael and Susan Bachman of Boulder, Colorado; Joseph Sidney and Terry Bachman of Reno, Nevada and David Wilson and Terri Bachman of Piney Flats, Tenn.; devoted cousins, other relatives and loving friends.
